Opening Speech by Prof. Harald Becker for the Exhibition at the Gallery Isshorst 17.2.2001

Ladies and Gentlemen,

from 1961 to 1966 I studied arts in Berlin at the Hochschule für bildende Künste. When I heard at the beginning of my study that there is a  Janssen-class at the university, I thought first of adifferent Janssen, i.e. of Horst Janssen, who already at that time due to the large spreading of his print graphics was very well-known and popular.  Except the identity of names the two artists do not connect for anything; their creations are extremely different, while they both never gave up the recognizable objectivity in their art.

About a painter Peter Janssen I had not heard until then, and that goes for a lot of art lovers today, maybe even yourself.

A wide audinece knows the popular Horst Janssen, who in the meantime got his own museum in Oldenbug, where as Peter Janssen, who indeed had quite large successes, who somehow unfortunately drifted into oblivion but today can be considered a secret tip.

I therefor am very glad, that the Gallery Isshorst  comemorates this unusual artist with this exhibition, who deserves to receive more general attention, because in arts after 1945 Janssen played an important role in Germany. Because he belonged to those with a "narrow escape" - as one used to call it in those days- namely to the generation of artists,  who already before 1933 were noticed and whose carrer was brutally interrupted by the events during the "Third Empire". Not only that Janssen  was forbidden to paint and to have exhibitions, but he also belonged to the ones pursued for their racial background. He spend quite some time abroad: in Italy, America and England. In 1945 he succeeded in escaping from the concentration camp in Lönnewitz, to where he was deported in 1944. Until the end of the war he went into hiding in Düsseldorf. From the artistic point of view, he could not do much in those days. But it is maybe significant, that the still remaining paintings from this period show foremost idillic landscapes and town views. A water colour from 1943 with a view on Xanten you can find in this exhibition.

Janssen - born in Bonn 1906- in the twenties studied at the academy of arts in Düsseldorf , where he was influenced most by the painter Heinrich Nauen, a co-founder of the group "Neues Rheinland". With Nauen, who himself was very much influenced by Matisse and who represented a moderate expressionism, modern art made its way into the Academy of Düsseldorf -and away from the academic boredom - opened the doors for new ways of creation and an immediate introduction of fresh colours.

Following this tradition, Peter Janssen tried a new beginning after the war. In this exhibition we can see a view examples of his still-lives, landscapes and town views, who sometimes have kind and naive shades.

In the fifties Janssen was honored by several awards: in 1952 he received the Cornelius-Price of the city of Düsseldorf and in 1955 the first price in the competition " Image of a German City" for his painting "Die Düsseldorfer Königsallee".  In 1957 he received a call as professor to the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin. The move from Düsseldorf to Berlin clearly had an influence on his way of painting, which was - joyfully rhenanian-french - now became more expressive and symbolic.

From my point of view the Berlin paintings of the sixties and early seventies are the most characteristic and most important works of the artist. Those were also the first works I got to see from Janssen at the time.

During many exhibitions in Berlin, particularly the great general reviews such as "Die Juryfreien" oder der "Great Berlin Art Exhibition on the fairgrounds at the radio tower I was confronted with his works, which stood out due to the fact that they did not fit the general frame of paintings common at this time. To explain what I mean,I would like to highlight the situation of arts in Berlin in the sixties. In the center of attention were paintings that were non-figurative, paintings without objects, which with an emotional handwriting should express the feelings and emotions of the artists spontaneously. Stilistically it could be categorised as a late phase of Informel or Tachism. Also most professors of the academies were working like that. Among others Hann Trier and Fred Thieler should be mentioned.

But tose forms of expression went out of steam and led to constant repetition and "empty formulars". They already made their way into conference rooms, offices or above the sofa at home, they matched kidney-shaped tables and cone-lamps. In the meantime something completely new emerged in England and America - Pop Art - which turned the art scene upside down and broad some fresh winfd into the stuffy cultural operations.

The  Pop artists Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein or David Hockney found interst again in objects and human figures, which as a matter of fact were taken from second hand reality, such as consumables or the triviality of popular movies and comics. In their paintings the pop artists showed this unchanged, plakativ and bright colours.

Prof.Harald Becker
